Enham's got musical talent

14 April 2008

On Friday last week an audience at Enham were treated to a musical concert of a different kind – all the instruments were made by the clients from wood and other everyday materials. Clients at Enham had taken part in a Musical Instruments making workshop with generous sponsorship from local solicitors Barker Son & Isherwood, throughout the week.

This project was organised by Colin Jones, an ex Design and Technology tutor who took early retirement to set up the charity ‘All in the Same Boat’. He mainly works with disabled adults and children building catamarans. Enham was fortunate enough to be involved in one of his boat building projects last year which was then sailed on Charlton Lakes.

The clients that have taken part in the Musical Instruments Workshop have benefited from the transferable skills derived through the project, such as team working, construction, testing and other practical skills. Music is known to be a therapeutic way for people to express themselves and the joint working that was necessary to perform the concert.

The concert was extremely well received by the audience as the clients performed music with the instruments they made and sang some well known songs. It brought together a variety of capabilities and the opportunity for those involved to gain a real sense of achievement.

The clients at Enham thoroughly enjoyed working with Colin Jones to make the instruments and perform. James Goatman a client at Enham who took part said “I really enjoyed working with Colin and I really want him to come back and work with us again. The best part for me was actually making the instruments but I did enjoy performing in the concert too”.

Approximately 20 clients were involved in the Musical Instruments Workshop and made one or two instruments each. For further information on this project please contact Tessa Makepeace on 01264 345836.
