Shark Diving
Diving with Sharks
If you enjoy a thrill with an extra bite, this fundraising activity may be for you!
Enham uses an aquarium based in Manchester for this activity, which has hundreds of different species under its roof with ten species of shark alone, including Sand, Tiger, Nurse and Lemon Sharks. Sand Tiger Sharks are the largest species at the centre, and the largest being 3 metres in length.
You will need to answer a medical questionnaire and pledge to raise a minimum of £500 for Enham (more if you can), which also covers the cost of the dive.
Before you dive with the sharks, you will be given extensive underwater training by experienced divers, who will also accompany you on the dive itself.
Here is Ed Stacey’s story of his dive:
“This was unlike anything I had seen before. Having snorkelled in a variety of places I know what the world looks like underwater but this time I was looking up at the surface several metres above me and I was breathing. More bizarrely, several metres away to my right, I could see my wife and my parents smiling and waving from an underwater tunnel – very, very strange.
Soon brightly coloured fish surrounded us while flash bulbs popped in the tunnels, but the moment was soon interrupted by the sound of metal bars being knocked together. It was the signal to pay attention to our instructor who indicated that a shark was approaching. As he pointed over my shoulder I turned to see a male Sand Tiger Shark no more than 5 feet away. I looked up to see a Barracuda sitting just a few feet above me. I am sure he had an expression on his face; like he had seen it countless times before yet still found it all highly amusing. From the corner of my eye I saw a Stingray. All around me were things that I could never have seen with my own eyes before, close enough to touch, and I was astounded.
My half-hour underwater came to an end leaving me desperate for more but knowing that it would have to be another time. I had just completed two lifetime firsts. Learning to dive and seeing sharks.”
